Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

The acquisition of assets that involve a long-term relationship and controlling interest of at least 10 % in an enterprise located in another economy.

An example of foreign direct investment would be an American company taking a majority stake in a company in China. Another example would be a Norwegian company setting up a joint venture to develop hydro power in Ethiopia.
